Radio Frequency Identification also known as RFID- is a small electronic device which consist of an antenna and a small chip. It uses electromagnetic fields to track tags and automatically identify the objects that are attached to it. These tags contain the electronically stored information.
There are two types of tags: Passive tags and Active tags.
Passive tags- These tags collect the energy from nearby RFID reader that is interrogating radio waves.
Active tags- These tags consist of a local power source like battery and can operate at hundreds of meters distance from RFID reader.
RFID device provides a unique identifier to an object. It serves the same function as the magnetic strip and the bar code serves. Just like bar code and magnetic strip are scanned to get all the relevant information, Radio Frequency Identification is scanned to retrieve all the unique identifying information.
RFID system was launched before but it has taken so long to come into common use. Recently Alien Technologies sold 500 million RFID tags at a cost of ten cents per tags to Gillete. Lack of industry standards is the main reason why this device was not so popular. Mostly companies invested in this technology only just to use tags to track the items within their control. While along with this tracking RFID system has many other advantages that were not known to people.
Advantages of RFID System:
A significant advantage of RFID system is that: relative to the scanner it does not need to be positioned precisely.
While shopping from stores we all might have noticed this some or the other time. Store clerks sometimes have difficulty in reading the bar codes. But in case of RFID you can put all of your purchases in a bag and set that bag on the scanner. RFID device will total all of your purchase immediately.
